Newborn Care 101: Tips for First-Time Parents
Share
(Because babies don’t come with manuals—but we’ve got your back anyway.)
First of all: Congrats, parents! Whether you just got home from the hospital or you're Googling this during a 3AM feeding (hi there 👋), welcome to the wild, wonderful world of newborn life.
Taking care of a newborn can feel a lot like defusing a bomb with no instructions—except the bomb is crying, adorable, and occasionally pees on you. But don’t panic! You’ve got this. And we’re here to help with real-life newborn care tips that actually make sense—no medical jargon, no parent-shaming, just solid advice (and maybe a few laughs).
🍼 1. Feed on demand (aka every time they even think about being hungry)
Newborns have one job: eat, sleep, poop, repeat. If you’re breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or combo feeding—what matters most is feeding your baby when they’re hungry. If they’re rooting, smacking their lips, or glaring at your snack, it’s feeding time.
👉 Pro tip: Burp halfway through. Babies don’t like surprise bubbles (who does?).
😴 2. Sleep? Kind of. In random 2-hour shifts.
Newborn sleep is… chaotic. They sleep a lot but not always when you want them to (like 2 AM to 6 AM). Totally normal! At this stage, you're just surviving—don’t worry about strict sleep schedules yet.
👉 Must-haves: Swaddles, cozy onesies, and a safe sleep space.

💩 3. Diaper duty: You’ll be a pro in 3 days flat
Newborns can go through 8-12 diapers a day. That’s not a joke. That’s science. Expect frequent checks, a few surprises, and the occasional “How did it get there?” moment.
👉 Keep handy: A stocked diaper caddy, extra onesies, and wipes. All the wipes.
🛁 4. Bathing your baby: Less frequent than you think
No need for daily baths (unless there’s a situation). Two or three times a week is fine for newborns. Focus on keeping their neck folds clean (because yes, things hide in there).
👉 Use gentle baby wash, a soft towel, and hooded baby towels for extra post-bath cuteness.
😍 5. Skin-to-skin and snuggles = magic
Seriously—snuggling your baby helps regulate their heart rate, breathing, and keeps you both calm. Plus, you’ll want to sniff their baby smell like a weirdo (totally normal).
🧦 6. Dress them like a cozy potato
Babies can’t regulate their temp well, so think layering. A good rule? One more layer than what you're wearing. And yes, their socks will always try to escape. Booties help.

💬 7. Ask for help. No trophies for doing it all alone.
You’re doing something amazing, but that doesn’t mean you have to do it all solo. Let someone bring you food. Say yes to naps. And if you're feeling overwhelmed? That’s normal—and you’re not alone.
